Art is like a bright star up ahead in the darkness of the world. It can lead peoples through the darkness. Art is a guide for every person who is looking for something.
-Thornton Dial
As
my fall classes wind to a close I have been thinking a lot about how
art is a language. We use paintings to express what we cannot say in
words. There is so much that we all want to share including the sacred
beauty around us. As the earth quiets with the stillness of winter may
you all find the voice to express what you are longing to say.
"The
human heart is full. Each pulse beat draws us towards new frontiers.
The life within us calls out for expression. This is what creativity
serves. It endeavors to bring some of our hidden life to expression in
order that we might come to see who we are."

When I was a teenager I went on a trip to France. I was very, very excited about the trip. I had studied French language and art for years beforehand to prepare.
When I arrive I had a wonderful time. I had a host family that served me five course meals from their seafood restaurant every evening. It was lovely but inside I felt a bit let down. France wasn't perfect. It wasn't Shangri-la, a mythically divine place.
One day toward the end of the trip I was walking along the streets of Paris with my friends just below Montmartre. I looked up and hanging from a window was a large banner in English which read:
"Bloom where you are planted."
Often happiness feels like it is just out of reach. It is as if we are climbing a mountain trying to reach the summit of bliss but the mountain just gets taller. It feels as though Shangri-la is just out of our reach. The Buddhists might say that this is because all life is suffering. If we can accept where we are we can learn to bloom anywhere. We can learn to create happiness by allowing our roots to sink down into the soil of wherever the wind takes us.
If you can love one person, you can love yourself.
If you can love yourself, you can love anyone.
If you can see beauty in one spot on earth, you can see it anywhere.

White River Shadows
White River Shadows Copyright 2014 Hirschten Oil on Canvas Board 11" x 14" SOLD |
"Shadow
is the obstruction of light. Shadows appear to me to be of supreme
importance in perspective, because, without them opaque and solid bodies
will be ill defined; that which is contained within their outlines and
their boundaries themselves will be ill-understood unless they are shown
against a background of a different tone from themselves."

Camp Washington Carver
Camp Washington Carver Copyright 2014 Addie Hirschten Oil on Canvas 16' x 20" |
I created this painting on site at Camp Washington Carver in West Virginia while attending the Clifftop Music Festival this year. It was a hot day... one section of this hill hadn't been mowed so it was rich with tall grasses and wildflowers. The small pond at the right was dark muddy purple and tucked between the trees. Bugs bit at my ankles the whole time I painted this but it was worth it to capture this scene! I took a photo of the scene as well and it was amazing to see how much more color variation I could see on site than in the photo. This is why, if you can, painting on site creates a richer painting. You can smell the wind and feel the heat! Summer.
"It was a splendid summer morning and it seemed as if nothing could go wrong."

The Clifftop Water Tower
The Clifftop Water Tower Copyright 2014 Addie Hirschten Oil on Canvas 16" x 20" SOLD |
Clifftop Music Festival is an annual event where old-time traditional musicians gather to camp and jam. It is located in West Virginia at Camp Washington Carver. When I attended this year everyone said that I should do a painting of the famous water tower which functions as an "Eiffel Tower of Clifftop." The view I had turned out to be nice as the sun was setting. You can glimpse the canopies under the trees.

30 Day Challenge Day 26: The Violin
The Violin Copyright 2014 Hirschten Oil on Canvas 16" x 20" |
My violin is by far the most beautiful thing I own. It was probably built in Germany in the 1880s or so. The back is inlaid with a mother of pearl design. I've wanted to paint it for awhile but this is my first attempt... and boy was it difficult! All of the weird shadows and proportions are what make it beautiful and almost impossible to depict.
"There is no exquisite beauty without some strangeness in the proportion."

30 Day Challenge Day 23: The Kiss
The Kiss Copyright 2014 Hirschten Pen and Ink on Paper 11" x 14" |
since feeling is first
who pays any attention
to the syntax of things
will never wholly kiss you;
wholly to be a fool
while Spring is in the world
my blood approves,
and kisses are a far better fate
than wisdom
lady i swear by all flowers. Don't cry
--the best gesture of my brain is less than
your eyelids' flutter which says
we are for each other: then
laugh, leaning back in my arms
for life's not a paragraph
And death i think is no parenthesis.

30 Day Challenge Day 19: Guildford Street Bridge in Broad Ripple
Guilford Street Bridge in Broad Ripple Copyright 2014 Hirschten Oil on Canvas 11" x 14" |
Whew I struggled with this one! It was the day of burnout from this 30 day challenge for me. My easel broke... I started cussing at the clouds for changing my shadows and geese were bothering me. It turned out a bit bright, as many plein air paintings do, but I think it could be a nice sketch for a larger painting.
"There is nothing in machinery, there is
nothing in embankments and railways and iron bridges and engineering
devices to oblige them to be ugly. Ugliness is the measure of
imperfection."

30 Day Challenge Day 18: Carrot Island Marsh Looking North
Carrot Island Marsh Looking North Copyright 2014 Addie Hirschten Oil on Canvas 12" x 24" |
This is a spot on Carrot Island, North Carolina where you can look over the flat marshland to see the Beaufort houses just beyond the scrubby coastal brush. As the sun was setting the two layers of clouds took on a rich variety of color. This preserve is named after Rachel Carson.
"To stand at the edge of the sea, to sense the ebb and flow of the tides, to feel the breath of a mist moving over a great salt marsh,
to watch the flight of shore birds that have swept up and down the surf
lines of the continents for untold thousands of year, to see the
running of the old eels and the young shad to the sea, is to have
knowledge of things that are as nearly eternal as any earthly life can
be."

When I made this painting my daughter voiced that she wanted to make one too. So we enjoyed the sunny day, painting on the porch. Here is her interpretation of the morning glories...

On the second day of having these flowers I moved them to a spot by the window. The morning light was so different than my spot light! So dramatic yet gentle.

"When you take a flower in your hand and really look at it, it's your world
for the moment. I want to give that world to someone else. Most people
in the city rush around so, they have no time to look at a flower. I
want them to see it whether they want to or not."

The Indianapolis Art Museum will soon be hosting a Georgia O'Keeffe exhibit! I borrowed this cow skull from a friend so that my student's could create still life paintings inspired by O'Keeffe's work. Here is my own take.
"Sun-bleached bones were most wonderful against the blue- that blue that will always be there as it is now after all man's destruction is finished."

Red Sails Copyright 2014 Hirschten Oil on Canvas 11" x 14" |
I saw this fabulous red sailboat off of the shores of Shackleford Banks, North Carolina this summer. It was amazing how well the color of the sails matched the driftwood and scrubby brush on the dunes of the island. I wish I could be there now to feel the wind filling up my metaphorical sails!

30 Day Challenge Day 1: Horses on Carrot Island
Horses on Carrot Island copyright 2014 Addie Hirschten Oil on Canvas 11" x 14" |
This painting is the first horse painting I've ever done! (Unless you count fourth grade drawings.) The horses on Carrot Island are all wild. This painting had to be done from a photo since they move so quickly. The sun was setting from the opposite direction creating amazing purple clouds to the east.

"It is the artist's business to create the sunshine when the sun fails."
-Romain Rolland
We create what we want to see more of, what we desperately crave. This is why northerners fill their homes with bright colors, why dissonant industrial sounds of the city make us crave the harmony of music. This is why the depressed become comedians. Artists create to push their own lives back into balance.
A few years ago I was horribly depressed. Everything seemed ugly. It was through art that I was able to see the beauty of the world again. With every painting I create I am reminding myself of that beauty. And it is my sincere, cheesy hope that you, dear reader, can see it too.
