How to be Happy

My daughter at the dinner table of my new home

A few years ago I was stuck in the sad rut.  I wallowed in the mucky mud of self-pity.  I probably had postpartum depression.  While it is healthy to face the bad stuff and talk about it, if you want to be happy you've got to come to a point where you get over it.

One trick to moving forward is to voice what is good in your life.  By focusing on what you love you will find ways to create more of what you want.

My family and I have a ritual of saying what we are thankful for at the dinner table before we eat.  It is very therapeutic.

Here are the top five things I am thankful for this year:

1. My Mom

2. My Daughter

3. My New Home

4. Chips and Salsa

5. The audience.  Without you my friends I would just be one hand clapping.   ha- ha

So what are you thankful for?

Do any of you have tricks to get over what Zig Ziglar calls stinkin' thinkin'?

  1. Losing my job in May didn't seem so bad at the time because I was going to be teaching summer school for the first time. When that was over in July, being grumpy in the slumpy started to set in. I'm still working on getting out of the pit. I am thankful for: 1) Leo, who asks me every day to go for a walk 2) My cat, who is content to just occupy my lap 3) My house that I helped paint the exterior 4) My garden that is still feeding me in Nov 5) my husband, who loves me for me

  2. Yes Momma Mcd- it is a good list you have.

Your phrase, "grumpy in the slumpy" made me smile.

The image of the pit remindes me of what Wilde wrote, "We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking up at the stars."

    Chin up buttercup :)

  3. I was in a bad mood at work and someone needed help with the computer. I asked if I could take control of the mouse, but I couldn't see the arrow. So I said, "Where's my magic arrow?" That made the patron and I laugh. My son, 3 years old, always asks where his magic arrow is when he's using the computer. After that, I wasn't in a bad mood anymore. I'm so thankful for the little ears and little eyes in my life that keep me grounded.
